This free concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, September 11, at the Allen Public Library, 300 N. Allen Dr. A combination of patriotic selections and pieces written specifically for the September 11 remembrance will be presented. VFW 2195 will present the colors, and First Responders will be attending.

Most notable selections to be included are:

Beautiful, flowing lines underscore trumpet soloist Kevin Purcell in a special version of TAPS arranged by band member Derek Molacek that will open the program. The Star-Spangled Banner is the official Department of Defense version used by all military bands and other performing ensembles.

Composed as a tribute to victims of September 11th:

A Hymn for the Lost and the Living by Eric Ewazen is a beautiful, highly expressive work for wind ensembles. It opens with a moving trumpet solo and builds into a profound, grieving memorial. Stephanie Waterman is the trumpet soloist.

9-11: Voices Echo is a two-movement piece written right after the tragedy. The first movement ("Attack") is aggressive and asymmetrical, with overlaying voices echoing the chaos. The second movement ("Aftermath") offers a somber, reflective
space.

Carmen Dragons highly emotional arrangement of America the Beautiful is one of the most dramatic settings of this patriotic standard ever written. Opening with the full ensemble followed by an extended section featuring the woodwinds, the brass and percussion are added to build to a very exciting and dynamic ending.

The cemetery, located in the Bachman Lake area, is traditionally visited by families on Día de Muertos. Celebración del Día de Muertos builds on this cultural custom. Celebración del Día de Muertosis free and open to the public and held at Crown Hill Memorial Park and Mausoleum featuring the historic Art Deco style mausoleum, recognized as a City of Dallas Historic Landmark.

During Celebración del Día de Muertos, Hughes Family Tribute Center will be sponsoring the art exhibition Pathways of Past Lives: The Persistence of Existence which explores the connections between life, death, memory, and rebirth through contemporary art inspired by the traditions of Día de Muertos. Opening Saturday, October 17, and continuing on selected dates through Monday, November 2, 2026, the exhibition will feature a central installation by Josh Niccolai-Belfi, creating a powerful visual focal point. Curated by artist Art Garcia, the exhibition will also include works by regional area artists examining the themes of Día de Muertos.

Celebración del Día de Muertos is a multidisciplinary cultural arts program honoring the artistic and cultural traditions of Dfa de los Muertos through visual art, dance, music, and community engagement. Now in its 12th year, the event builds on authentic traditions and honors families coming to the cemetery and mausoleum to commune with their loved ones who are no longer with us on this earth. A priority goal is to welcome and educate attendees from diverse backgrounds about the meaning and importance of Dia de los Muertos and the ancient Mayan philosophy of the continuum of life and death.

The project will feature a newly commissioned immersive on-site art installation, original choreography, newly designed costumes and scenic elements, live musical performances, a commissioned theatrical reading, and interactive family activities that create an authentic and accessible cultural experience for audiences of all backgrounds. A central artistic component of the project is the site-specific art installation, "Los caminos de las vidas pasadas: la persistencia de la existencia," created by visual artist Josh Niccolai-Belfi in partnership with dancers and choreographers Favian Herrera and Fabiola Sanchez, and acoustic musician Noe Garcia. The installation will center on a sculptural aluminum altar that will serve as both a visual artwork and a performance environment. Dancers wearing original masks designed by Niccolai-Belfi will interact with the installation through choreographed and improvised movement that symbolizes the transition between the world of the living and the afterlife. Live acoustic music will accompany the performances, allowing each presentation to respond organically to the venue and audience. Small commemorative masks created by the artist will be distributed to visitors, extending the artistic experience beyond the performance itself.

Josh Niccolai-Belfi is a Dallas-based painter and sculptor native to the Bishop Arts district of Oak Cliff. He is a Fine Art Conservator and an experienced metal fabricator, welder, and wood worker, working with Dallas-based Van Enter Studio. His early art education included W.E. Greiner, Booker T. Washington HS PVA, and scholarships with the Meadows Museum at SMU. With a studio in the vibrant Tin District area of West Dallas, he maintains a prolific and diverse body of work. Currently, his work is on exhibit at "Texas Sculpts" at the Art Centre of Plano. His work explores sweeping vistas of color and texture that prohibit the eye to remain stationary with encroaching fields of pigment, interrupted peaks and crevasses, a landscape of the imagination.

The central on-site art installation will be accompanied by a visual art exhibition of Dia de los Muertos-themed works by area artists. This exhibit will be curated by Dallas-based artist, Art Garcia. Teatro Dallas has been commissioned to create a theatrical reading to accompany the art installation.

Additional artistic elements will include newly designed costumes, scenic environments, and decorative installations inspired by traditional Df a de los Muertos imagery including butterflies, flowers, calaveras, catrinas, and ofrendas. The Celebraci6n is designed to increase public understanding of the history, artistic traditions, and cultural significance of Celebración del Día de Muertos while providing opportunities for meaningful community participation. Although the holiday has gained widespread recognition throughout the United States, its Indigenous origins and enduring cultural traditions are often misunderstood. This project presents Celebración del Día de Muertos as it has been celebrated for centuries: a joyful remembrance that honors ancestors and loved ones through art, music, ritual, and community gathering.

The traditions of Celebración del Día de Muertos date back more than 3,000 years to the Indigenous cultures of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. Rather than focusing on death as something to be feared, the celebration affirms the continuing relationship between the living and those who have passed. Families gather to honor loved ones through prayer, meditation, flowers, music, food, and ofrendas (offerings), reaffirming the importance of family, cultural identity, and intergenerational connection. By presenting these traditions in an artistic and educational setting, the project promotes cultural appreciation, cross-cultural understanding, and preservation of an important aspect of Mexican and Central American heritage.

The 2026 Celebraci6n will take place at Crown Hill Memorial Park and Mausoleum near Bachman Lake. The cemetery provides an authentic setting that reflects the longstanding tradition of families gathering at burial sites to celebrate and remember loved ones. This meaningful location reinforces the cultural significance of the event while creating a respectful environment for reflection, remembrance, and artistic expression.

Young Prince Alexander comes across a forest-dwelling while out riding one day. Knocking on the door, he meets Jonathan, a young man or perhaps just an older boy, with whom he quickly develops a connection because of their similar likes. However, once Alex enters Jonathans house, he discovers Jonathan is hiding bad intentions.

Inspired by events from the authors own childhood, the tale is an allegory for lost innocence and friendship betrayed, but also about having the courage to speak up, overcoming the trauma of the past, and not letting it define ones future. The story presents important and sensitive issues that children can understand, especially if shared one-on-one or in a group, followed by adult-led discussion of what Alexander experienced, and probably not for random consumption without context. The way the author delivers the story is a gift to parents who need to share this with their children.

The author does a great job developing his characters, and while Alexander has princely virtues, he still feels like any young boy. His championing of his younger sister when Jonathan comes back around will resonate especially well with children who have siblings. In the story itself, there is mention of The Lost Forest that goes unexplained and a few stories that are given a quick description as Alex and Jonathan converse and build rapport. I hope the author follows this picture book with others that pursue those mentioned tales and location, but I found their inclusion here, while intriguing, a distraction from the bigger story.

The story is enhanced by Kyle Completos artwork, which illustrates different scenes throughout the story. I found Jonathans alter ego particularly vivid and appropriately menacing.

I recommend THE TALE OF THE PRINCE AND THE SPIDER for home, school, and afterschool program bookshelves.

Joyce Proell and Brenda Whiteside

A planned sisters spa weekend at an upscale hotel results in murder instead.

Candy, Cigarettes, and Murder is the debut novel in authors Joyce Proells and Brenda Whitesides new Chocolate Martini Sisters Mystery cozy mystery series. I was hooked from the start. The engaging sisters, mature women of a certain age, are the titular sleuths with an affinity for the chocolate martinis served up by a particular bartender at the Dulce Hotels Azul Restaurant and Bar, and they are a delightful pair of opposites. When a planned sisters spa weekend turns deadly, two sisters work together to find a killer!

I liked the sisters tradition of spending a spa-filled, chocolate martini-drenched weekend together at the local Dulce Hotel, catching up and celebrating each others birthdays. Emma, a recent widow, is more conservative, reserved, and introverted, while Nicole is a twice-divorced extrovert with a more colorful and outgoing temperament. The sisters are quite relatable. It is not a completely stress-free weekend for the pair. Em is finding it hard to relax; this is her first birthday without her spouse, and since her loss, she worries more about something happening to her son, Liam, who is on a hiking trip with friends. Nic has her own issues to deal with as well. Her ex-husband and the father of her only child is staying at the same hotel with his latest young girlfriend. The normally tranquil hotel is overrun with artists participating in the local arts festival the same weekend, with a juried competition in the lobby. Not to mention, the sisters keep discovering murder victims to add to the chaos.

The murders are simply done, yet stymie both the police and the sisters. The women, as frequent visitors and long-time guests at the hotel, boldly question anyone and everyone for information. There are numerous suspects, and the sisters build plausible scenarios and possible motives for each one before doggedly pursuing their hypotheses and crossing them off their list while the police conduct their official investigation. And although the two detectives are likable guys, I rooted for Em and Nic to solve the case first.

With its fun opening premise, likable and engaging characters, attractive hotel setting, and puzzling murder mystery, I recommend CANDY, CIGARETTES, AND MURDER to cozy mystery readers who enjoy a more mature, relatable set of sleuths and a small-town Arizona setting.

by

Zaida Alfaro

Top-notch music-themed murder mystery!

In the Key of Dead is the second book in author Zaida Alfaro's outstanding Miami Murder Mystery series. But never fear; even if you haven't read the debut novel (and you'll want to), the book easily stands alone. Its engaging main characters and intriguing music business storyline immediately drew me in.

When the murder of her record producer puts Violet "Vy" Blanco in the path of the aggressively hostile lead detective on the case, she naturally starts asking questions of her own. Odd incidents that threaten the completion of her first album and other creepy occurrences, including her constant feeling of being watched, keep the suspense cooking.

Vy, even with her anxieties and phobias, is a strong, smart, and talented protagonist. Along with her fierce and loving sister, Alexia, this pair stole my heart. Vy has been in a romantic relationship for the past year with Detective Bryan Houston. With his overwhelming work schedule, they are experiencing some common growing pains, and he is on the periphery for most of the book.

Red herrings and plot twists had me guessing until the actual resolution of the case. I was absorbed by Vy's story, making this one of my favorite mysteries for the year.

I recommend IN THE KEY OF DEAD to mystery readers who like stories with strong female characters, tales involving the music business, Cuban culture, or settings in Miami.

by

Linda Chamberlain, PhD, MPH

Wonderful illustrations with an important, well-crafted, and delightfully delivered message.

After completing their morning chores on the homestead, Galena and Kimmo hear Tutku, the lead dog of the family's sled team, start to howl. Confused when they couldn't see what there was to howl about, they asked the wise husky why. He explained that it made him feel good, whether happy, sad, or many other emotions. When the children tried it, they found out he was right! They did feel better. That led them to seek out the other dogs for more remedies for handling big emotions.

Howling with Huskies by author, scientist, and Alaskan Linda Chamberlain simply and directly passes along ways that children (and adults, too!) can more easily manage stress and other feelings. The book is wonderfully illustrated with charming pictures and fabulous colors. The Northern Lights are gorgeous.

The children are depicted participating in chores and play, and there's even a discreet mention of the daily work that goes into caring for their dogs. Aside from the book's big message, this may segue into an easy discussion about the responsibilities of pet ownership with children who have been asking their parents to bring a new one into the family. New terms are introduced, specific to dog sledding, that will interest children and adults alike. The author uses the names of dogs she has personally known for her canine characters, and there is a fun mix of proper names, both common and those more familiar to residents in the far north.

However, the book's purpose is to offer coping strategies, and advice from dogs may make a child more likely to try them than suggestions from a parent, teacher, doctor, or other adults. My boys would have loved this book when they were kids, especially since our family dog was a Siberian Husky named Ivan.

From its fun and alliterative title to its wonderful illustrations and important, well-crafted, and delivered message, I recommend HOWLING WITH HUSKIES to families for reading aloud and sharing with young elementary school-age readers.

TWU and Girl Scouts leaders celebrated the partnership during Thursdays signing ceremony at Texas Woman's University's Brackenridge Hall Auditorium. The agreement establishes a framework for ongoing collaboration between the two organizations while strengthening the pipeline of future women leaders through education, leadership and service.

"As Texas Woman's University celebrates its 125th anniversary, this partnership reflects our longstanding commitment to recognizing leadership and expanding educational opportunity for women," said Dr. Carine Feyten, chancellor and president of Texas Woman's University. "Gold Award Girl Scouts have already demonstrated the perseverance, initiative and service that define exceptional leaders. We are proud to recognize those accomplishments and help these young women continue their leadership journey at Texas Woman's."

Through the partnership, eligible Gold Award Girl Scouts will receive admission consideration after completing their junior year of high school, subject to university admission requirements. Additional benefits include merit scholarship opportunities for qualifying students, admission application fee waivers, dedicated admissions counseling, financial aid guidance and college readiness programming. Eligible students also may qualify for TWU's Zero Tuition Guarantee.

Beyond student benefits, the partnership creates new opportunities for collaborative educational outreach, student engagement and leadership development initiatives while increasing awareness of Texas Woman's University among Girl Scouts throughout Northeast Texas.

"Leadership begins long before a young woman arrives on a college campus," said Jennifer K. Bartkowski, chief executive officer of Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas. "Through Girl Scouts, girls develop the courage, confidence and character to lead, and Texas Woman's University will help them build on that foundation through higher education. Together, we're building the leadership pipeline for Texas."

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest achievement in Girl Scouting and recognizes girls who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable projects that create lasting community impact. Under the partnership, Gold Award recipients will have expanded access to admissions support and educational resources designed to help them successfully transition to college.

As Texas Woman's University celebrates its 125th anniversary, the new agreement reflects the university's continued commitment to expanding educational opportunities and preparing future generations of women leaders through education, leadership and service.

ABOUT TEXAS WOMAN'S UNIVERSITY

Dr. John Safar, clinical faculty in comprehensive dentistry at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in Dallas, said a healthy smile is essential for a successful school year. He shared five reasons scheduling a dental appointment before school starts or any other time of year is important:

To detect cavities early

Cavities often develop without causing pain. During your visit, the dentist can identify early decay through a thorough exam and dental X-rays.

Treating cavities when they are small is more comfortable, more predictable, and far less costly than waiting until they become painful or require advanced procedures, Safar said.

Some schools require back-to-school dental visits, and its for good reasons. Cavities tooth decay are among the most common chronic diseases of childhood in the nation, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Oral health problems affect school performance and a childs quality of life, Safar said.

Protect gums and bones

Bleeding gums often signal early gum disease, but bone loss usually progresses quietly.

Your dentist will measure your gum pockets, review X-rays, and provide personalized hygiene guidance, he said. Early care helps prevent long-term damage and reduces the risk of tooth loss as you age.

Children develop gum disease mainly from plaque buildup, the sticky film on teeth from bacteria and food residue. Gingivitis, the most common form of gum disease, is often reversible with proper oral healthcare.

Adults develop it, too. Periodontitis, a common form of gum disease, involves bone loss around teeth. More than 40% of adults 30 years or over have some stage of periodontitis, the American Dental Association reported. It can be slowed and managed, but periodontitis is irreversible.

Screen for oral cancers

Many oral cancers are painless in their early stages. A routine dental visit includes a careful examination of your head, neck and mouth to identify any unusual areas.

Early detection greatly improves treatment success and long-term outcomes, Safar said.

To monitor previous dental work

Fillings, crowns and other restorative work can wear down or become damaged over time. Regular checkups ensure dental work remains stable, functional and in good condition helping you avoid unexpected problems, Safar said.

To improve comfort, confidence and freshness

Professional cleanings remove stains caused by colas, coffee and foods, giving your smile a brighter appearance.

Your dentist can also help manage dry mouth, identify its causes and provide solutions for persistent bad breath so you feel confident every day, Safar said. Start the new school year off with a beautiful smile, whether youre a student, a parent or a teacher or all three.

CHILDREN'S BOOK REVIEW: THE JULES VERNE PROPHECY by Larry Schwarz & Iva-Marie Palmer

The Jules Verne Prophecy

by

Larry Schwarz & Iva-Marie Palmer

An exciting adventure story that will grab the attention and imagination of even reluctant young readers!

Thirteen-year-old American teenager Owen Godfrey is spending his summer in Paris with his physics professor mother while she guest lectures at the Institut Lagrange de Paris. But rather than enjoying lazy days relaxing and seeing the sights, his mother has enrolled him in a special summer course to study the life and works of the father of science fiction, Jules Verne. As it turns out, the course is interesting, and there are a couple of pretty cool kids in the class with him, but only hours before their first big exam over 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, a street punk steals Owens backpack with his copy of the book that he needs to take the test.

His classmates, Nas and Rose, take Owen to a used bookstore where they purchase an old leather-bound copy of what appears to be a collection of all Vernes works and then hurry back to school just in time for the exam. But as soon as Owen opens La Prophétie de Jules Verne, he realizes its not a collection at all but something entirely different, and so does his teacher, who confiscates the book and dismisses Owen from the test.

Later that night, Owen returns to school to appeal to be allowed to take the test, and he spies Professor Bessier through his office window as he hides the strange old book and leaves. But before Owen can catch up to him, two goons grab the professor, shove him into a car, and speed away.

The following morning, when the professor fails to show up for class, the three friends fear hes been kidnapped because of the book. They retrieve the book from its hiding place in the professors now-trashed office and attempt to unravel the cryptic clues about a fabulous treasure Verne was rumored to have left behind and find the professor. However, they soon discover they are not alone; someone is following them and watching their every move.

The Jules Verne Prophecy by writing partners Larry Schwarz and Iva-Marie Palmer is an exciting adventure story that will grab the attention and imagination of even reluctant young readers. The pace is brisk, and the action is non-stop as the three main characters Owen Godrey, Rose Bordage, and Nasim Shirvani work out the meanings behind the clues and travel around The City of Lights. Owen has a crush on Rose, and their initial meeting is laugh-out-loud funny. The three friends learn many things, including first impressions and assumptions are not always accurate.

Their race across Paris ahead of the bad guys is riveting and creative in its execution, and their discoveries live up to the reputation of Jules Verne. A couple of loose ends are left hanging when the story closes, providing a great jumping-off point for a sequel. Ill be looking forward to more adventures with these characters with anticipation.

I recommend THE JULES VERNE PROPHECY to middle-grade readers and for reading aloud at school, after-school programs, and at home with the entire family.

Misha Saidov is an experienced life and performance coach, author, and founder of the Institute of Metacognitive Programming and the coaching company, Think Meta. His latest project is The Efficiency Journal, a self-contained time management tool that is applicable to anyones successful use in the form of a do-it-yourself self-examination journal.

The program follows these simple and successful five points developed over a century ago and attributed to productivity consultant Ivy Lee.

At the end of each working day, write down the six most important things you need to accomplish tomorrow.

Prioritize those six items according to their true importance.

Tomorrow, concentrate only on the first task.

Work until the first task is finished before moving on to the second task. Approach the rest of your list in the same fashion.

Repeat this process every working day.

The journal is organized into 12-week periods and stimulates users to begin by identifying ones goals and breaking down the individual tasks that need to be accomplished to achieve these goals, clearly requires examination of ones aspirations, developing a plan of attack, reflection on progress and results, and re-evaluation of processes and tasks. It requires paying attention to where you want to go, determining how to get there, removing obstacles and eliminating activities that dont further or support achieving those goals, acknowledging successes, and rewarding oneself for positive progress.

I recommend THE EFFICIENCY JOURNAL to anyone looking to energize their work life or life in general and achieve their dreams.

About Josh Niccolai-Belfi

Jarvis

The Tundra Passage: After the Dark

The After Collection, #4

by

K.A. Jarvis

Exciting, suspenseful story of survival and political intrigue above the Arctic Circle.

The Tundra Passage: After the Dark is the fourth book in author K.A. Jarviss riveting After Collection, a series of standalone survival thrillers with the common threads of personal resilience, hope, and found family in the face of catastrophic disasters and societal collapse. In this latest tale, newly graduated Floridian veterinarian Grace Campbell heads to the Alaskan tundra in search of the father shed never known about until after her mothers death. But just as she begins her journey, the electrical grid mysteriously starts glitching and eventually fails completely, leaving the lower 48 states in darkness and danger. When the bush plane shes in is forced to crash-land in the back of beyond, killing the local pilot, it falls to Grace and the pilots loyal wolf-dog hybrid to guide the other passengers, including an eleven-year-old girl, to the nearest point of civilization: the research station where Graces father may be working. However, one of the other survivors isnt who they claim to be and may be working against the groups best interests.

Grace Campbell is a wonderful main character, a good woman who had a very difficult childhood, having to pull herself up by her own bootstraps from a way too early age, and learning that she is the only person she can truly rely on when things need doing. The first quarter of the book is devoted to building Graces backstory, and understanding where she came from is critical to the development of the character and how she can handle the later events: such a good story. She has the natural self-doubts one would expect from a lifelong Floridian stranded in the wilderness of northwest Alaska, and she must overcome a big learning curve quickly to keep everyone safe. I loved her relationship with the malamute-wolf crossbreed, Sika, and some of the scenes with the dog were exciting and emotional as he protects his newfound family from the dangers they encounter.

Besides the struggles of surviving the long trek to safety, the story also includes a sweet romance that slowly forms over the days of travel. Two single, self-reliant people learn about themselves and each other, building trust and a strong partnership as they overcome the many obstacles on their way to safety.

The authors writing style is compelling and immersive, and I was immediately drawn into Graces life, her questions about her fathers identity, and her mothers inexplicable decision to withhold that information from her. Later, the survivors journey across the tundra to the remote permafrost research station was so riveting, I felt I was along for the trek; I was exhausted by the time the book came to a close. I didnt want to put this book down the entire time I was reading it.

I recommend THE TUNDRA PASSAGE to readers of thrillers, suspense, and survival stories, especially those set in Alaska or with post-apocalyptic elements.

Martin

Summer of Love

Music & Murder Mystery, #3

by

Paul D. Martin

Hear the music, feel the love, and find the truth!

Summer of Love is not only a novel of mystery and music but also an immersive, fictional account of San Francisco during the summer of 1967. Viewed through the eyes of twin brothers, recent graduates of UC Berkeley, I could almost feel the thumping of bass, the smell of pot, or the heat and buggy humidity of Vietnam in this fantastically atmosphere-drenched tale.

After graduation in May, Bobby Doyle, an aspiring writer, remains in San Francisco to hone his skills as a stringer for the newspaper reporting on the burgeoning music scene there. His brother, Jack, heads to Vietnam as a young, unprepared second lieutenant in the Army. Each faces adulthood during that summer, weathering vastly different trials, though Jack does sum up that each is a prisoner in their own way. Bobby and Jack are incredibly likable characters, and I enjoyed the story from both of their viewpoints.

The novels initially bright atmosphere gradually darkens with tension and foreboding as the summer days pass, and sudden death strikes without warning people in the brothers circles. The tension was palpable, relieved only when Bobbys story stepped into the realm of the musical explosion happening in the city. For Jack, the tension only builds as the war continues, and he is consumed by the things he experiences.

The descriptions of the music festivals, the groups, and the songs were a wonderful throwback and will be a trip down memory lane for some readers. As I read, I played many of the tunes, eventually creating a pretty entertaining playlist of the songs by the artists that were mentioned.

The murders that occur in the story are sudden and frightening. Were they random? Was there a motive behind it all? The police seem to throw up their hands pretty fast when they decide Bobby has an alibi and later dont feel the need to look any further when they think theyve got their suspect in custody. It falls to Bobby and his friend, Raul Pitman, to try and get to the truth. This storyline is solid, with a red herring and a surprising twist or two that made me gasp out loud!

With its likable main characters and immersive historical setting, I recommend SUMMER OF LOVE to readers who enjoy historical mysteries, coming-of-age stories, and tales set in San Francisco and those of the Vietnam War.

Founded in 1901 after years of persistent advocacy by civic leaders and women-led organizations and graduating just one student in its inaugural class Texas Womans University began as a little-known but ambitious effort to expand educational opportunity for Texas women. Today, it is a nationally recognized, Carnegie-classified R2 research institution and the nations first and only woman-focused public university system, with an enrollment of more than 15,000 across campuses in Denton, Dallas and Houston and a network of more than 121,000 alumni spanning Texas and beyond.

This fall, State Fair of Texas visitors will have an opportunity to experience the universitys remarkable history firsthand through Blazing New Trails: 125 Years of Texas Womans University, a landmark exhibition celebrating TWUs 125th anniversary. View the TWU history timeline.

Texas Womans University was founded on a bold idea that everyone deserves an education that prepares them not simply to participate in society, but to help shape it, said Texas Womans Chancellor Carine Feyten. For 125 years, TWU has forged a remarkable legacy of opening doors, expanding opportunity and transforming lives.

Drawing from selections housed in the Texas Woman's University Special Collections and University Archives, the exhibit tells the story of more than a century of ambition, resilience, innovation and Pioneer spirit, reflecting TWU's enduring impact on education, healthcare, leadership and opportunity for women and families.

At the heart of the exhibit are selections from The Woman's Collection, one of the nation's oldest and largest repositories dedicated to women's history, alongside materials preserved through the university archives. Established in 1932 and designated Texas' official women's history collection in 1979, The Woman's Collection curates stories ranging from nationally known trailblazers to everyday women whose quieter lives helped shape communities, professions and families across generations.

The "Blazing New Trails" TWU history exhibit includes opportunities to:

Trace TWU's fascinating history through founding-era documents, early university records and other rarely-seen archival materials that chronicle the university's growth from a small women's college to a nationally recognized university system.

Explore changing roles for women and the evolution of campus life through historic photographs, campus publications, apparel, uniforms and artifacts spanning more than a century of university traditions, milestones and everyday moments.

Discover intriguing selections from some of TWU's most celebrated collections, including the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) archive and TWU's renowned cookbook collection.

Experience stories of innovation, service and leadership through materials reflecting TWU's legacy in healthcare, public service, research and decades of barriers broken and doors opened for women in Texas and beyond.

ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND

At its core, this exhibit is about peoplethe administrators, faculty, staff, students and alumnae who changed the landscape of TWU over time and were pioneers in every sense of the word, said Suzanne Sellers, dean of libraries. Each piece tells a story of new trails blazed for womennot just in access to higher education, but as entrepreneurs, pilots, politicians, healers and educators who broke barriers in fields that had long excluded them.

The story of Texas Womans University began long before the institution opened its doors. Throughout the 1890s, civic leaders and women-led organizations advocated for the establishment of a college where young women could receive a practical education at a time when opportunities for women were sharply limited. In 1901, the Texas Legislature authorized the founding of what would become the Girls Industrial College, combining traditional literary education with instruction in domestic sciences, child care and practical nursing.

When classes began in 1903, the institution enrolled 186 students and employed a faculty of 14. Its curriculum reflected both the realities and aspirations of the time, offering courses ranging from photography, bookkeeping and literary studies to horticulture, nursing care, child development and the chemical study of foods. Helen M. Stoddard, Mary Eleanor Brackenridge and Eliza S. R. Johnson served among the universitys original board of regents, becoming the first women to sit on the governing board of a Texas university. Over time, TWU expanded both its curriculum and access, responding to and often shaping expanding opportunities for women in higher education and professional life. Today, Texas Womans University is:

The nations first and only woman-focused university system, with campuses in Denton, Dallas and Houston.

A nationally recognized, Carnegie-classified R2 research institution known for student experience, social and economic mobility, academic quality and leadership in nursing and allied health professions, education, arts and sciences, and business.

Home to recent milestones signaling the universitys growing impact, including the opening of a $107 million Health Sciences Center and the launch of the Doswell School of Aeronautical Sciences.

An institution that continues to advance affordability, first-generation student success, service to student parents, research and workforce preparation for a diverse student body that is nearly 90% women.

The State Fair exhibit is a highlight of the universitys 125th anniversary celebration, themed Dreaming Big for 125 Years, which honors TWUs history while looking toward its future. Anniversary programming will continue throughout the year, including the Dream Big Festival (Oct. 1924), featuring student-centered activities, athletics events, lectures, history exhibits, a suffrage musical and the reveal of a new public art installation. The anniversary activities also celebrate the successful conclusion of the Dream Big fundraising campaign, TWUs first-ever comprehensive campaign, which is expected to significantly exceed its original goal of $125 million.

Beyond the State Fair exhibit and anniversary celebrations, the public is encouraged to explore the extensive historical collections and archives housed in TWUs Blagg-Huey Library, many of which are accessible year-round both in person and online. Through The Womans Collection and University Archives, visitors can engage with one of the nations richest concentrations of womens history resources, including:

Women in aviation collections, including the official Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) archive

The Texas Womens Hall of Fame collection

The Texas First Ladies Historic Gown Collection

The TWU Cookbook Collection, the largest such collection among U.S. academic institutions

Collections related to 20th-century womens clubs and civic organizations

The recently acquired Florence Nightingale Collection

A Graphic Novel

by

Tori Sharp

A fun middle-grade graphic novel about stepping outside your comfort zone and having the courage to try something new!

Stand Up! by Tori Sharp is a fun middle-grade graphic novel featuring best friends Clay and Kyle and how they team up to develop a successful podcast using the natural strengths theyve recognized they have growing up with ADHD and autism. The two eighth-grade protagonists capitalize on what many might see as stumbling blocks to reaching their dreams.

I enjoyed getting to know Clay, Kyle, and their friends from the Greenlake Middle School Drama Club as they prepare to mount the final show, a musical called Gals and Dolls, of their middle-school years. However, both Clay and Kyle have always worked backstage, and this time, they want to audition for acting roles. After the experience of their audition, Clay decides to stay the course and act; Kyle isnt feeling it and opts to stage manage, a role at which he both excels and is comfortable. Making the switch to performer proves unexpectedly difficult for Clay, though, as her ADHD doesnt pair well with the seemingly endless repetition and the hurry-up-and-wait nature of rehearsals. Dania, another classmate making her first appearance on stage playing the lead female role, faces struggles of her own with slowly increasing stage fright. Clays immediate crush on Dania is sweet and entertaining when her attraction makes her tongue-tied and verbally awkward around the other girl. Suddenly shy, she is unable to talk to Dania about her feelings. However, Danias collaboration on Clay and Kyles brilliantly funny podcast, Passing Notes, paves the way for the two to get closer. The story has a spectacular HEA for everyone.

An interesting aspect of the story is gender identity and non-traditional families. While the main characters are named Clay and Kyle, typically male names, it is left ambiguous in both the narrative (for quite a while) and the illustrations as to whether they are actually males or females. Frankly, and this may be the point, it doesnt matter to the trajectory of the story. The plot would work in the same fashion with any gender configuration. Also, Clay, Kyle, and their respective moms all live together in a single apartment on the second floor of an older home, where the first floor has been converted into a coffee shop/bakery. The relationship between the moms is never addressed or revealed, and readers are left to establish that themselves. They could be friends sharing the space, each with their one child, or they could be a couple. What we DO know is that they are both committed parents, and the four of them get along very happily. Once again, their status doesnt affect the trajectory of the plot. They and their friend Lettie, the owner of the bakery, have an enviable and long-held friendship, but it is unclear whether Lettie lives above the bakery as well.

The story moves quickly, going from the end of one middle-grade musical into preparation for the next: Clay developing her crush on Dania, creating the podcast, and including Dania in the podcast production. The artwork, while more modern, reminded me somewhat of the Archie comic books of my childhood, while the storyline is much more robust than anything from that era. I enjoyed the clever feminine twists to the names or titles of everything imaginable throughout the story. Well done!

I recommend STAND UP! to middle-grade readers who enjoy graphic novels, especially those looking for reps of ADHD, autism, and LGBTQ main characters.
